Protecting Paradise: Sea Turtle Nesting at El Dorado Casitas

Some of the most powerful memories come when you least expect them. One morning, as we walked the beach at El Dorado Casitas, Sunny the Surfboard slowed down and pointed toward a stretch of sand dotted with small white markers. Each one told a story: the night a mother turtle came ashore, the eggs she tucked safely beneath the sand, and the hope that tiny hatchlings would soon make their way to the sea.

El Dorado’s sea turtle preservation program is part of a larger conservation effort across the Riviera Maya, where thousands of endangered sea turtles return each year to nest. Between May and October, resorts and local organizations patrol the beaches, protect nests, and track hatchlings to improve survival rates. Volunteers and staff often work through the night, carefully relocating eggs if they’re at risk and ensuring that when the hatchlings emerge, they’re guided safely toward the water.

For guests, it’s an unforgettable experience. On some evenings, the staff at El Dorado even don gloves to gently assist the baby turtles, letting travelers witness the magic of instinct as the hatchlings follow the pull of the moonlight into the waves. Standing there quietly, you realize it’s not just a show — it’s a reminder of how fragile and interconnected the ecosystems we visit truly are.

Sunny may love the waves, but on this night, he reminded us that protecting them is every bit as important as riding them.

🌍 Sunny’s Travel Tip: Choose resorts with active conservation programs. Not only does your stay directly support the ecosystems you came to enjoy, but it also opens the door to extraordinary encounters — like watching baby turtles take their very first steps toward the ocean. It’s proof that luxury and responsibility can live beautifully side by side.
