Is a Catamaran Excursion Worth It?
What to Know Before You Book

Turquoise water, ocean breezes, and a day on the Caribbean Sea sound like the perfect vacation. But not all catamaran excursions offer the same experience.
One of our favorite ways to explore the Caribbean is by catamaran. Whether we're sailing to Isla Mujeres, enjoying a sunset cruise, or relaxing on deck with a cold drink, there's something special about seeing a destination from the water.
However, catamaran excursions vary considerably. Some are floating parties with music and unlimited cocktails, while others offer smaller groups, quiet sailing, and secluded beaches. Knowing what to expect before booking can make all the difference.
1. Choose Your Catamaran Experience
Not every catamaran excursion offers the same atmosphere. Party catamarans typically feature lively music, open bars, and a social environment, making them popular with groups and celebrations. Luxury catamarans often focus on smaller groups, premium beverages, upgraded dining, and more personalized service.
Sunset cruises are generally shorter excursions centered around scenic sailing, while island excursions combine time on the water with beach clubs, sightseeing, shopping, or lunch ashore. Before booking, decide whether your priority is relaxation, entertainment, or exploring another destination.

2. You Don't Have to Snorkel to Enjoy the Trip
Many Caribbean catamaran excursions include snorkeling, but participation is usually optional. We've enjoyed plenty of sailing excursions without ever putting on a snorkel mask. Relaxing on deck, taking photographs, and spending time at an island beach club can be just as enjoyable.
However, some excursions devote a significant portion of the itinerary to snorkeling. If you don't plan to participate, check how long the boat remains at each stop and whether nonparticipants can comfortably stay aboard. You may prefer an excursion focused on sailing, sightseeing, or beach time instead.
3. Pay Attention to Group Size
Group size can significantly influence your experience. Larger catamarans often accommodate dozens of guests and create a lively, social atmosphere, while smaller excursions generally provide more room to relax and more personalized service.
Don't assume that an excursion advertised as luxury automatically means a small group. Check the maximum passenger capacity and whether the trip is shared or private. For special occasions, a smaller group or private charter may be worth the additional cost.

4. Know What's Included Before You Book
Catamaran excursions can look similar in photographs while offering very different amenities. Before booking, confirm whether the price includes transportation, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, meals, snorkeling equipment, beach club admission, and any required docking or marine park fees.
Pay particular attention to the itinerary. A six-hour excursion doesn't necessarily mean six hours of sailing or beach time. Transportation, boarding, and snorkeling stops may account for a substantial portion of your day. Understanding how your time will be spent helps avoid disappointment.
5. Consider the Weather and Your Comfort
Even in the Caribbean, wind, waves, and passing storms can affect sailing conditions. Catamarans are generally more stable than many single-hull boats, but they aren't completely motion-free. If you're prone to seasickness, consider a shorter excursion and check the marine forecast before traveling.
You'll also spend several hours exposed to the sun, so bring sunscreen that meets local requirements, sunglasses, a hat, and a lightweight cover-up. A waterproof phone pouch is useful, and comfortable footwear makes boarding easier. If mobility is a concern, confirm the boarding arrangements and accessibility before booking.

6. Don't Overlook the Destination
Sometimes the best part of a catamaran excursion is where it takes you. We've enjoyed sailing to Isla Mujeres from the Riviera Maya, combining beautiful Caribbean views with time to explore the island. Other excursions may visit secluded beaches, coastal landmarks, or destinations accessible primarily by boat.
If your excursion includes an island stop, check how much time you'll actually have ashore. An hour at a beach club offers a very different experience from several hours exploring local shops and restaurants. For sunset cruises, consider the sailing route and departure location to ensure you'll have the views you're hoping for.
Travel Tip
Before booking, look beyond the photographs and read the complete itinerary. Check the passenger capacity, snorkeling stops, included amenities, and how much time you'll spend at your destination. The best excursion isn't necessarily the most expensive or the longest; it's the one that matches your travel style.
We also recommend scheduling your catamaran excursion early in your vacation whenever possible. If weather forces a cancellation, you'll have a better chance of rescheduling before heading home.
So, Is a Catamaran Excursion Worth It?
For us, absolutely! Whether you prefer a lively afternoon with cocktails, a quiet sail along the coast, or an island adventure, a catamaran excursion offers a wonderful way to experience the Caribbean from a different perspective.
The key is choosing the right experience for your vacation. Compare itineraries, understand what's included, and select an excursion that lets you enjoy the destination your way.
