5 Things to Check Before Booking an Adults-Only All-Inclusive Resort

Adults-only all-inclusive resorts may look similar in photos, but the experience can be surprisingly different. Before choosing your next Caribbean or Mexico getaway, here are five things worth checking that could save you money, frustration, or disappointment.
1. Check the Beach, Not Just the Ocean View
A beachfront resort doesn't necessarily have a swimmable beach. Some Riviera Maya properties have rocky shorelines, limited ocean access, or seasonal sargassum seaweed.
Travel Tip: Look at recent guest photos and ask whether the beach has sandy swimming areas. If ocean swimming is important, check seasonal conditions before booking.
2. Find Out Which Restaurants Require Reservations
Some all-inclusive resorts allow you to walk into specialty restaurants, while others require reservations that can fill up quickly. Certain dining experiences may also carry an additional charge.
Travel Tip: Check restaurant reservation policies before arrival. If reservations are required, ask whether you can book them before check-in, especially for shorter stays.
3. Compare Room Locations, Not Just Categories
An ocean-view room may have a partial or distant view, while a swim-up suite might face a busy shared pool rather than offer privacy. Rooms near entertainment venues can also be noisy late into the evening.
During our stay at El Dorado Seaside Palms in Mexico, our Presidential Studio included a private plunge pool, Bali bed, outdoor shower, and butler service. The private outdoor space was an upgrade we genuinely enjoyed.
Travel Tip: Ask about the room's location, view, privacy, and proximity to entertainment before paying for an upgrade.
4. Calculate the Real Cost of Getting There
A resort listed as being in Cancun may actually be well over an hour from Cancun International Airport. Transfers aren't always included, and private transportation can add significantly to your vacation cost.
Travel Tip: Confirm the actual transfer time and whether transportation is included. For a three- or four-night getaway, spending several hours traveling to and from the resort can take a noticeable bite out of your vacation.
5. Know What Your All-Inclusive Package Excludes
Not every all-inclusive package includes premium liquor, room service, spa hydrotherapy, motorized water sports, or access to every restaurant and pool. Some resorts reserve their best amenities for upgraded room categories.
Travel Tip: Ask for the inclusions specific to your room category, not just the resort's general all-inclusive description. A slightly more expensive package may offer better value if it includes amenities you'd otherwise pay for separately.
One Final Tip: Choose for Your Travel Style
Before booking, decide on your three must-haves. A swimmable beach? Exceptional dining? A quiet pool? A private plunge pool? A resort with 10 restaurants and nonstop entertainment isn't necessarily better than a smaller, quieter property with everything you actually want. The best all-inclusive resort isn't the one offering the most. It's the one offering what matters most to you.
