Best Time to Book a Spa Treatment

A massage or spa day can be one of the most relaxing parts of a vacation, but timing matters. Booking the wrong treatment before a beach day, excursion, or long flight can take away from the experience. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your resort spa visit.

When Should You Schedule Your Spa Day?

Early in your vacation: A relaxing massage can be a great way to unwind after traveling. Avoid scheduling it on arrival day, though, since flight delays and airport transfers can make timing unpredictable.

Midway through your stay: Often the best choice for longer vacations. After a few days of excursions, swimming, and sightseeing, a spa afternoon provides a welcome break.

Toward the end: A massage or pedicure can be a nice way to finish your getaway, particularly if you have a special dinner planned. Just avoid scheduling too close to checkout or your airport transfer.

During our recent Riviera Maya stay, we enjoyed massages, a pedicure, and time at the resort's spa facilities. Spacing these experiences between other activities gave us time to relax without missing out on exploring.

Match Your Treatment to Your Plans

  • Massages: Schedule after a busy excursion day, and leave time afterward to relax.
  • Facials: Avoid scheduling exfoliating treatments immediately before extended sun exposure.
  • Body scrubs: Plan around beach and pool days, as freshly exfoliated skin may be more sun-sensitive.
  • Manicures and pedicures: Book before a special evening, allowing time for polish to dry.
  • Hydrotherapy: Ask whether steam rooms, saunas, and hydrotherapy pools are included and whether they should be used before your treatment.

Get More Value From Your Spa Visit

Resort spas often offer more than the treatment itself. Some include access to relaxation lounges, hydrotherapy circuits, steam rooms, or private pools, allowing you to turn a 60-minute massage into several hours of relaxation.

Travel Tip: Ask how early you can arrive and how long you can use the facilities. Some spas limit access to specific time windows or charge separately for hydrotherapy.

Book Early, but Check the Fine Print

Couples' massages, beachfront treatment rooms, and popular appointment times can fill up quickly, particularly during peak travel seasons. And if your resort package includes spa credits, check the restrictions. Some credits apply only to treatments of a certain length or price, exclude promotional packages, or cannot be used toward gratuities.

One final travel tip: If there's a particular treatment or experience you're looking forward to, reserve it before arriving at the resort. You can plan the rest of your activities around it rather than settling for whatever appointment times remain.
