How Many Pairs of Shoes Do You Really Need for Vacation?

Six pairs of shoes for a seven-day vacation? It might be time to rethink what's going into your suitcase!

Shoes are one of the biggest space wasters in a suitcase. They're bulky, surprisingly heavy, and often packed for occasions that never happen. Whether you're heading to Europe, boarding a cruise, or spending a week at an all-inclusive resort, choosing the right footwear can make packing considerably easier.

The trick isn't necessarily bringing fewer shoes. It's bringing shoes that work for more than one occasion.

The Three-Pair Rule

For most weeklong vacations, three pairs of shoes are plenty:

  • Comfortable walking shoes: Your go-to pair for airports, sightseeing, excursions, and long days exploring.
  • Versatile dress shoes: Sandals, flats, or stylish sneakers that work for restaurants, evening entertainment, and nicer outfits.
  • Destination-specific footwear: Flip-flops for a beach vacation, hiking shoes for outdoor adventures, or another pair suited to your planned activities.

Wear your bulkiest pair on travel days to save valuable suitcase space.

Pack for Your Activities, Not Every Outfit

Before packing, think about what you'll actually be doing. A Mediterranean cruise with cobblestone streets requires different footwear than a Caribbean resort vacation. For European sightseeing, prioritize supportive shoes with good traction. For tropical destinations, lightweight sandals and water-friendly footwear may be more practical. If you're planning specialty activities such as hiking, snorkeling, or formal evenings, check the footwear requirements before leaving home. Avoid packing shoes simply because they match one particular outfit.

Choose Shoes That Work Double Duty

Neutral colors make it easier to coordinate shoes with multiple outfits. Black, tan, white, and metallic tones are especially versatile.  A comfortable pair of fashionable sneakers can work for sightseeing and casual dinners. Dressy flat sandals can transition from daytime exploring to evening dining. The more occasions a pair covers, the more valuable its suitcase space becomes.

Don't Break In New Shoes on Vacation

Few things can derail a sightseeing day faster than uncomfortable footwear. Wear new shoes several times before traveling, preferably on walks similar to what you'll experience at your destination. Consider bringing blister protection, particularly for trips involving extensive walking. Even comfortable shoes can cause problems after several hours on unfamiliar terrain.

Make the Most of Your Suitcase Space

Pack shoes along the edges or bottom of your suitcase, using shoe bags to keep soles away from clothing. Fill the interiors with socks or other small items to use otherwise wasted space. If you're traveling with carry-on luggage, every inch matters. Packing cubes can help organize clothing, but limiting bulky footwear often makes an even bigger difference.

Pack Smarter, Travel Lighter

A well-packed suitcase isn't about having an outfit and matching shoes for every possibility. It's about being comfortable, prepared, and free to enjoy your destination without hauling around things you never use. Before adding another pair, ask yourself: Will I actually wear these, and can something already packed do the same job? Your feet—and your suitcase—will thank you.
