Cozumel Without Snorkeling: 5 Things to Do on the Island

Cozumel may be famous for its coral reefs, but there's plenty to discover without getting underwater. During our recent visit, we explored the island by Jeep, visiting historic landmarks, discovering Mayan traditions, spotting wildlife, and enjoying the Caribbean coastline. It was one of our favorite excursions in Mexico!
Here are five stops worth considering for your own Cozumel adventure.

1. Climb the Celarain Lighthouse
Located inside Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, the historic Celarain Lighthouse offers panoramic views of Cozumel's coastline and surrounding nature reserve. There's also a small navigation museum and a Mayan archaeological site within the park.
Travel Tip: Wear comfortable shoes for the lighthouse stairs and bring water. Punta Sur charges admission, so check current entrance fees and operating hours before visiting.
2. Spot Crocodiles at Laguna Colombia
Also inside Punta Sur, Laguna Colombia is home to crocodiles and a variety of bird species. Designated observation areas provide opportunities to spot wildlife without disturbing their natural habitat.
Travel Tip: Bring binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens. Wildlife sightings aren't guaranteed, and crocodiles may be difficult to spot depending on the time of day.
3. Experience Mayan Culture at Pueblo del Maíz
Pueblo del Maíz offers an interactive introduction to Mayan traditions through music, storytelling, cultural demonstrations, and activities featuring corn and cacao.
Travel Tip: This is a structured cultural experience rather than a quick sightseeing stop. Check tour times and allow enough time to enjoy the full program.
4. Relax at Anémona de Mar
After exploring Punta Sur, Anémona de Mar is a convenient place to enjoy the beach, grab lunch, and take in the Caribbean views. We included it during our Jeep excursion, making it a relaxing break between sightseeing stops.
Travel Tip: Confirm beach club access, minimum spending requirements, and what's included before arriving. Some beach clubs charge separately for loungers or other amenities.
5. Explore Downtown San Miguel
Cozumel's main town offers waterfront views, colorful streets, local shops, and plenty of places to enjoy Mexican food. It's a great stop before catching the ferry back to Playa del Carmen.
Travel Tip: If you're shopping for souvenirs, explore beyond the waterfront tourist shops. You'll often find a wider variety of locally made items a few streets inland.
Planning Your Cozumel Day Trip
If you're visiting from Playa del Carmen, take an early ferry to make the most of your day. Both Ultramar and Winjet operate passenger ferry services, but schedules can change with weather conditions. A guided Jeep excursion or private driver can make exploring easier, particularly if you want to visit Punta Sur and Pueblo del Maíz in one day.
Travel Tip: Don't underestimate driving distances or the time needed at each stop. Punta Sur alone can take several hours if you visit the lighthouse, wildlife areas, and beach. Choose your priorities rather than trying to squeeze everything into a single afternoon.
