The Best Way to Experience Tokyo:

Start with a Local Guide

One of the most effective ways to approach any major city is to start with an overview on day one.

It’s a strategy we use often. In many destinations, that means a hop-on, hop-off bus—an easy way to get oriented without worrying about navigation, parking, or planning every stop in advance. It allows you to see the layout of the city, identify what interests you, and return later to explore those areas in more depth.

Tokyo, however, requires a different approach.

Why a Private Guide Works Better in Tokyo

Tokyo is not a single, centralized city—it’s a collection of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own identity. Understanding how they connect, and what makes each one worth your time, is what shapes the entire experience. Public transportation is efficient, but covering multiple neighborhoods in a single day—especially on your first day—can be time-consuming and overwhelming. A private, customizable tour with a local guide solves that.

With the ability to move efficiently between neighborhoods and adjust the day in real time, it provides the same benefits as an overview tour—but with far more flexibility and context. This is how we approached our first day in Tokyo, with Cappo joining us for the experience.

Our Recommended Tokyo Private Tour

This first day wasn’t about seeing everything—it was about understanding where we wanted to spend more time.

Here’s how each neighborhood fits into your Tokyo itinerary:For our first day in Tokyo, we explored the city with a private, fully customizable tour—and it was one of the most efficient ways to get oriented.

Even after living in Japan for four years, we found it incredibly valuable. Tokyo is constantly evolving, and having a local guide added context, history, and insight we wouldn’t have gotten on our own. Instead of navigating transit or planning logistics, we were able to move seamlessly between neighborhoods and focus on what interested us most.
